Urban Big Data Centre – SIN presentation of UK Roads Liaison Group
Today we are guests at the UK Roads Liaison Group Transport Data Workshop at the Urban Big Data Centre in Glasgow. Richard Owen is presenting research into ‘safety in numbers’ for cyclists using data from surveys on resident cycling rates to assess how risk changes in areas where more people cycle. The conclusions are similar to those demonstrated in international research but the good news is that the SiN effect happens quite quickly. We don’t need Amsterdam levels of cycling to achieve a better safety rates but there are areas of the UK where much more needs to be done.
Other topics cover crowdsourced data via Strava, using telematics to map non-compliance, and the effect of street lights on cycling activity. Lots of people out there are using different, innovative data sources in road safety research and this was an excellent opportunity to network and share our experiences.
